In traditional Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of appreciating beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete" in nature. Wabi-sabi is becoming more popular in recent times.

Floors are crucially important to the overall feeling of a house or a room. In the wabi-sabi house, floors should be as plain as possible (no screaming patterns) and made of smooth, hard materials because these are easy to sweep clean, easy to wash and easy to maintain. With hard floors, you need have no worries about dirt, or fleas, or stains, or your kids’ asthma, and you can quickly go over them each day with nothing but a brush. The most wabi kind of floor is probably the self-finished surface that needs no additional treatment – wooden floors that construct the ceilings of the rooms below.

Hardwood floors are one of the best choices for people that like wabi-sabi. The right hardwood floor can be plain, smooth, and hard which is perfect for wabi-sabi. Wood in general is imperfect, it can not be fully uniform, each plank has different variations which makes each plank unique and special. It’s truly the epitome of beauty in imperfection.
